I am Interesting…I Promise!
It’s a sign your screen goes dark in the sun. Is it fair that I am only “unavailable” when I have work or plans? The art of being busy has been lost. On sunny days, weekends, rainy days, and times when you have an hour or two to kill, do I need to pick up a phone?
Living in the 21st century when asked what I do in my free time, is sports an automatic answer? 90% of the time it is total bull. I pick up my phone, and I see inspiration for DIYs, kitchen disasters, and workout routines. Or I see that a new plague is starting and everyone needs to hide. Its honestly a 50/50.
I only realized there was a social problem when I looked at my resume a few years back. The little paragraph at the bottom about hobbies and interests? Blank.
As a society we should be filling those lines. Yes we are over worked and yes many days we don’t have time. But without the addictive nature of social media and the perpetual cycle of open app, scroll, open new app, scroll, would we have the spare time? I’m not shaming those who believe it is enjoyable, but I will shame those who think it is fulfilling.
Let’s change that and make ourselves interesting again. I am taking my own advice I promise. Example 1: this blog. Currently writing this on my train commute so trust me anything is possible if you commit.
When I meet someone, one of the first things I look to connect with are their interests. Are they a movie enthusiast? A coder? Maybe they enjoy roller blading. The sky isn’t even a limit since Katy Perry became an astronaut.
In all seriousness people with autonomous hobbies are proven to be happier. I made that up. But I hope it is true! So get out there and finish that puzzle or take a pole dancing class. If you make an excuse that you don’t have the time right now for frivolous things: I don’t believe you.
I am even providing some things you can do indoors as the temperatures begin to drop this year:
Knitting/ crochet
Needle pointing
Reading (Fiction, non-fiction, romance, JUST PICK UP A BOOK!)
Sewing
Nail art
Painting
Woodwork (I dare you to build me a bird house)
Peloton biking
Squash
Origami
Start a Youtube
Learn a Language
Become ordained
Please take this list and run with it. These are just some things I could come up with but seriously, do anything that is safe and doesn’t hurt humanity please.
